Darkie is a derogatory term for a Black person, referring to dark skin color.
The word was once used casually but is now recognized as a racial slur: A Virginia shopkeeper in 1920 might have used "darkie" without thinking twice.
Today it is offensive and rarely appears outside historical contexts or deliberate racism.
