culs-de-sac

Streets without exits

Culs-de-sac is the plural of cul-de-sac, a dead-end street, typically one that widens at the closed end to allow cars to turn around.

The term comes from French for "bottom of the sack." Culs-de-sac are common in suburban developments, where they reduce through traffic and create quieter residential pockets: The neighborhood was a maze of culs-de-sac.

The anglicized plural cul-de-sacs is equally common.
