creaking floors
Noisy old planks
Creaking floors are floorboards that make a high-pitched squeaking or groaning sound when walked on, typically from wood rubbing against nails or other boards.
The phrase evokes old houses, haunted settings, and the impossibility of moving quietly: The creaking floors gave away his midnight trip to the kitchen.
