crack of doom

Judgment Day's thunder

The crack of doom is the thunderclap or trumpet blast announcing the Last Judgment—the end of the world.

The phrase appears in Shakespeare's *Macbeth* and has since become a dramatic way to describe any loud, ominous sound or the end of everything: We'll be here until the crack of doom.
