contact sheets

Contact sheets are prints showing all the frames from a roll of film as small thumbnails on a single page, used by photographers to review and select images before making full-size prints.

The term comes from the production method: film negatives laid in direct contact with photographic paper during exposure.

She marked her favorites on the contact sheet with a grease pencil.

Though digital photography has largely replaced the practice, the format persists as a visual reference tool and aesthetic choice.
