computer core
Main processing unit
Computer core refers to the central processing unit or a subdivision of it—the part of a computer that executes instructions.
Modern processors contain multiple cores, each capable of handling tasks independently: a quad-core processor, an eight-core chip.
More cores generally means better performance for parallel tasks.
In older usage, core referred to magnetic core memory, an early form of computer storage that gave rise to the term core dump—a complete snapshot of a program's memory state, still used today even though the technology isn't.
