compact cassettes

Compact cassettes are small plastic cartridges containing magnetic tape for audio recording and playback.

Introduced in the 1960s, they became the dominant portable music format through the 1980s, enabling the Walkman revolution and homemade mixtapes.

I found a box of old compact cassettes in the attic.

Now largely obsolete, replaced by digital formats.

Usually just called cassettes or tapes.
