comedy roasts
Humorous public mockery
A comedy roast is an event where a guest of honor is subjected to jokes, insults, and mockery by friends, colleagues, or comedians—all in good fun.
The format treats affectionate ridicule as tribute: The roast of the retiring CEO got brutal, but he laughed the whole time.
Roasts balance genuine meanness with underlying warmth; the target is expected to take it well.
Television roasts, particularly those on Comedy Central, have popularized the format beyond its origins in private club dinners.
