come-alongs
Hand-operated ratchet hoists
Come-alongs are handheld mechanical devices used to pull, lift, or tension heavy loads—essentially portable winches.
A ratcheting mechanism lets one person move weight far beyond what they could manage by direct force: We used a come-along to pull the truck out of the ditch.
The name captures the coaxing motion of drawing something toward you.
In law enforcement, come-alongs also refers to painful grip techniques used to compel compliance—wrist locks or arm holds that make a resistant person "come along" with an officer.
