combat vet
Former warzone soldier
A combat vet is a military veteran who has served in active combat zones or engaged in armed conflict, as opposed to veterans whose service was entirely stateside or non-combat.
The distinction matters for benefits, medical treatment, and the particular psychological burdens of having experienced warfare firsthand: Combat vets often struggle with readjustment to civilian life.
