cojones

Audacious masculine fortitude

Cojones is Spanish for testicles, borrowed into English as slang for courage or nerve—the same metaphorical leap as "balls." It often carries a tone of grudging admiration: You have to admit, it took cojones to stand up to the boss like that.

The Spanish pronunciation (roughly co-HO-nays) is usually preserved.
