coal towns
Pit village settlements
Coal towns are communities that developed around coal mining operations, typically company-owned settlements where miners lived in company housing, shopped at company stores, and depended entirely on the mine for livelihood.
The term evokes images of Appalachian poverty, labor struggles, and economic vulnerability: When the mine closed, the coal town slowly died.
Many became ghost towns when deposits were exhausted or the industry declined.
