clearwing

See-through winged insect

A clearwing is a moth with largely transparent wings, the scales having been lost or reduced so that the wing membrane shows through.

Many clearwing moths mimic wasps or bees in appearance and behavior, a disguise that deters predators.

The term also applies to certain butterflies and hummingbird moths with similar transparent patches: A clearwing hovered at the flowers.
