clearing off

Making a hasty exit

Clearing off means leaving a place, especially departing quickly or unceremoniously.

It's informal British English, often used as a command: Clear off! means go away.

Someone might clear off after an argument or when they've worn out their welcome: He cleared off before anyone could ask questions.

The phrase can also mean removing items from a surface: I spent the morning clearing off my desk.
