clay lamp
Terracotta oil light
A clay lamp is a simple lighting device made of fired clay, typically a shallow vessel that holds oil and a wick.
These lamps were the primary source of artificial light in ancient Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Asian civilizations for thousands of years: Archaeologists found dozens of clay lamps in the tomb.
The basic design—a reservoir for olive oil or animal fat with a spout for the wick—remained largely unchanged across millennia.
