clavichords

Quiet keyboard instruments

Clavichords are early keyboard instruments in which pressing a key causes a metal blade to strike a string.

Unlike pianos, the blade stays in contact with the string, allowing the player to create vibrato by varying finger pressure.

The clavichord was popular from the Renaissance through the Baroque period, prized for its expressive intimacy despite its quiet tone: Bach likely composed much of his keyboard music on a clavichord.
