classical epics
Heroic verse narratives
Classical epics are long narrative poems from ancient Greece and Rome that recount the deeds of heroes and gods—Homer's *Iliad* and *Odyssey*, Virgil's *Aeneid*.
They established conventions that shaped Western literature: elevated style, invocations to the muse, extended similes, and episodic journeys through mortal and divine realms.
Paradise Lost draws heavily on the classical epics.
