cinematic language
Visual storytelling techniques
Cinematic language is the system of visual and auditory techniques filmmakers use to convey meaning—camera angles, lighting, editing, sound design, and movement.
Just as written language uses grammar and syntax, cinema communicates through its own conventions: a close-up suggests intimacy, a fade to black marks passage of time, ominous music signals danger.
The director's cinematic language owes much to German Expressionism.
