chip readers
Payment verification devices
Chip readers are devices that process payment cards by reading the embedded microchip rather than the magnetic stripe.
Found at retail terminals, ATMs, and gas pumps, they require inserting or tapping the card: The chip reader was slow, so I just tapped.
The technology reduces fraud by generating unique transaction codes.
Also called EMV readers.
