checkered tablecloth
Gingham dining spread
A checkered tablecloth is a cloth covering for a table featuring a pattern of alternating colored squares, typically red and white or blue and white.
The pattern evokes casual dining—picnics, barbecues, Italian trattorias, and diners: We spread a checkered tablecloth over the picnic table.
The image has become shorthand for unpretentious, homestyle eating.
