censusing

Officially counting heads

Censusing is the activity of conducting a census—systematically counting and gathering information about a population.

The term applies to surveys of people, wildlife, or other subjects: We spent the summer censusing bald eagle nests along the river.

Though census as a verb is well-established, censusing remains relatively uncommon, often replaced by phrases like "taking a census" or "conducting a count."
