cayuse

Hardy plains horse

A cayuse is a small, hardy horse, especially one of the rugged breed developed by Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest.

The term spread to mean any scrubby or inferior horse: He rode a beat-up old cayuse.

The word comes from the Cayuse people of Oregon and Washington, who were known for their skilled horse breeding. (Capitalized Cayuse refers to the people or their language.)
