carbon budget

Permitted pollution quota

A carbon budget is the maximum amount of carbon dioxide that can be emitted while still limiting global warming to a specific target, typically 1.5 or 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

Once the budget is exhausted, any additional emissions would push temperatures beyond the target.

At current rates, the carbon budget for 1.5 degrees will be spent within a decade.

The term also applies to organizations or nations tracking their own emission limits.
