candlenut

Hawaiian lamp fuel

Candlenut is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific, or its oily seed.

The seeds burn like candles when lit—hence the name—and yield oil used in cooking, cosmetics, and wood finishing.

In Hawaiian cuisine, roasted candlenuts appear in the condiment kukui.

The tree is Hawaii's state tree.
