call response
Leader-audience musical dialogue
Call response (often call and response) is a pattern where one voice or instrument makes a statement and another answers it.
The form is fundamental to African American musical traditions—gospel, blues, jazz—where a lead singer calls and the congregation or band responds.
The pattern extends beyond music: a preacher's call draws the congregation's amen, a drill sergeant's chant gets soldiers' echo.
In programming, call response describes how systems communicate—one sends a request, another returns data.
