by-pass
Route avoiding congestion
By-pass is an alternative spelling of bypass.
As a noun, it's a road that routes traffic around a congested area, or a surgical procedure that creates an alternative pathway for blood flow: heart by-pass surgery.
As a verb, to by-pass is to go around or avoid: We by-passed the city center.
The unhyphenated form is now standard.
