butt load

Whole lot, casually

Butt load (also buttload) is an informal term for a large, unspecified quantity: I have a butt load of work to finish.

Though it sounds like crude slang, the term has roots in an actual unit of measurement—a butt was a large cask holding about 126 gallons of wine.

The historical origin rarely matters to speakers, who use it simply as a colorful way to say "a lot."
