busy signals
Calls can't connect
Busy signals are the repeated tones a telephone produces when the called number is already in use.
Before call waiting and voicemail became standard, hearing a busy signal meant trying again later.
The term now carries nostalgic weight—a reminder of how phone communication once worked: I kept getting a busy signal, so I just texted instead.
