burnsides

Side facial hair

Burnsides are a style of facial hair with full whiskers on the cheeks connected to a mustache, but with the chin clean-shaven—the inverse of a goatee.

Named for American Civil War general Ambrose Burnside, who wore them prominently.

The rearranged form *sideburns* has become the more common term.
