bugout

Panic and leave

Bugout refers to a hasty departure or emergency evacuation, originally military slang for retreating under pressure.

The term now appears frequently in survivalist contexts: a bugout bag contains emergency supplies, a bugout location is a predetermined refuge.

As a verb (bug out), it means to leave quickly: When the power grid failed, we bugged out to the cabin.

The phrase can also mean eyes widening dramatically: His eyes bugged out when he saw the bill.
