bugouts

Hasty emergency retreats

Bugouts are hasty departures or evacuations, especially emergency retreats from a dangerous situation.

The term originated in military slang for a panicked withdrawal: The bugout from the overrun position was chaotic.

In survivalist culture, a bugout is a planned escape to a safer location when disaster strikes, hence bugout bag—a pre-packed kit for quick evacuation.
