bridge burning
Ending all ties
Bridge burning is deliberately destroying a relationship, opportunity, or connection in a way that makes return impossible.
The metaphor comes from military strategy—burning a bridge behind you prevents retreat but also cuts off the enemy.
In everyday use, it's usually cautioned against: Don't burn your bridges with former employers.
Someone who burns bridges acts rashly or defiantly, closing doors that might have remained open.
