boxwork

Mineral grid formation

Boxwork is a geological formation of thin mineral blades or plates projecting from cave walls or ceilings in a honeycomb or grid pattern.

The structure forms when mineral veins remain after softer surrounding rock erodes away, leaving interconnected ridges that resemble the partitions of a box: Wind Cave is famous for its extensive boxwork.

The term also applies to similar grid patterns in other contexts, such as decorative architectural latticework.
