bowed strings

Arco section instruments

Bowed strings are the instruments of an orchestra played with a bow—violin, viola, cello, and double bass.

The term distinguishes these from plucked strings like guitars and harps.

In a score, the bowed strings enter at measure forty.

String sections are sometimes called simply "the strings," with bowing assumed.
