bone marrow donor
Stem cell giver
A bone marrow donor is someone who gives bone marrow—the spongy tissue inside bones that produces blood cells—for transplant into a patient whose own marrow is diseased or damaged.
Donors may be relatives or strangers matched through a registry.
The procedure involves either surgical extraction from the hip bone or filtering stem cells from the blood: She registered as a bone marrow donor after her cousin was diagnosed with leukemia.
