block grant
Flexible federal allocation
A block grant is a large sum of government funding given to a state or local authority for broad purposes, with few restrictions on how it's spent within that category.
Unlike categorical grants, which must fund specific programs, block grants give recipients flexibility to allocate money according to local priorities.
The state received a block grant for community development.
Critics argue block grants can mask funding cuts, while supporters praise their efficiency and local control.
