blade runners
Ice rink speedsters
Blade runners are workers who replace or repair the blades on ice rinks, keeping the surface smooth for skating.
The term gained wider recognition from the 1982 science fiction film *Blade Runner*, where it refers to police officers who hunt down rogue androids.
In that fictional context, blade runners execute—or "retire"—artificial humans who have escaped servitude.
The film title has since colored any use of the phrase with dystopian undertones.
