blackwashing
Changing character ethnicity
Blackwashing is the practice of casting Black actors in roles originally written for or historically portrayed by white or non-Black characters, especially in adaptations of existing works.
The term mirrors "whitewashing" (casting white actors in non-white roles) but reverses the direction.
Critics use it pejoratively to oppose such casting choices; others see it as correcting historical imbalances in representation: They accused the studio of blackwashing by casting a Black actress as the mermaid.
