black press

Minority-owned news publications

Black press refers to newspapers, magazines, and other publications created by and for Black communities, particularly in the United States.

The term emerged in the 19th century when mainstream media largely ignored or misrepresented Black life.

Publications like the *Chicago Defender* and *Ebony* became vital institutions: The black press covered civil rights struggles when white papers wouldn't.
