black fraternities
African American brotherhoods
Black fraternities are Greek-letter social organizations founded by and for African Americans, typically at historically black colleges and universities.
The oldest, Alpha Phi Alpha, was established in 1906 at Cornell.
These organizations, along with black sororities, form the "Divine Nine"—groups united under the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
They emphasize community service, academic achievement, and lifelong brotherhood, with distinctive traditions including stepping and strolling.
He pledged a black fraternity his sophomore year.
