bird mite
Avian ectoparasite species
Bird mites are tiny parasitic arachnids that feed on the blood of birds and sometimes bite humans when their bird hosts leave or die.
They're common in nests and can infest homes when birds nest in eaves or vents: We had bird mites after clearing out an old sparrow nest.
The bites cause intense itching but bird mites cannot survive long on human blood.
