bimetal

Dual metal strip

Bimetal is a compound of two different metals bonded together, engineered to exploit their different rates of thermal expansion.

When heated, the metals expand unequally, causing the strip to bend—a property used in thermostats, circuit breakers, and temperature gauges.

As an adjective, bimetallic describes anything involving two metals: a bimetallic coin with a bronze center and nickel ring.
