beacon fire

Warning fire lit

A beacon fire is a fire lit on a high point as a signal, typically to warn of danger or summon help across distances.

Before modern communication, chains of beacon fires could relay messages across entire countries: When the Spanish Armada was sighted, beacon fires spread the alarm from hilltop to hilltop.

The term evokes medieval and ancient warning systems.
