banzai charge

Desperate frontal attack

A banzai charge was a desperate frontal assault by Japanese infantry in World War II, typically a last-ditch attack when defeat seemed certain.

The term comes from the battle cry *banzai* ("ten thousand years," wishing the emperor long life).

These mass charges, often with fixed bayonets, were tactically suicidal but reflected a military culture that prized death over surrender.

The phrase now describes any reckless, all-or-nothing assault: The startup made a banzai charge into an already saturated market.
