banisters
Handrails on stairs
Banisters are the handrails and their supporting posts along a staircase.
Children slide down banisters; adults grip them for balance.
The word usually refers to the complete railing structure, though technically the banister is just the handrail while the vertical posts are balusters.
Also spelled bannisters.
