banana peel slip
Slapstick floor hazard
A banana peel slip is the classic comedic pratfall where someone steps on a discarded banana peel and loses their footing.
The image became a staple of slapstick comedy in early film and cartoon.
Figuratively, it describes any sudden, unexpected downfall caused by something trivial: The CEO's offhand remark about layoffs turned into a banana peel slip that tanked the stock price.
