banana oil

Insincere sweet talk

Banana oil is a solvent with a fruity smell, used in lacquers and as a flavoring.

The term also means nonsense or insincere flattery—smooth talk meant to charm or deceive: Don't give me that banana oil.

This slang sense, popular in the early twentieth century, has largely faded from use.
