banana ketchup

Sweet tropical sauce

Banana ketchup is a Filipino condiment made from mashed bananas, vinegar, sugar, and spices, often dyed red to resemble tomato ketchup.

It developed during World War II when tomatoes were scarce.

Sweeter and milder than tomato ketchup, it's used similarly—on fried foods, hot dogs, and as a cooking ingredient: The pancit was served with banana ketchup on the side.
