baling out

Abandoning a plane

Baling out is the act of jumping from an aircraft, typically in an emergency when the plane is going down: The pilot baled out over the Channel.

By extension, it means abandoning any failing situation: Investors started baling out when the stock dropped.

The spelling with an "a" is more common in British English; Americans usually write "bailing out."
