backwoods horror
Rural isolation dread
Backwoods horror is a subgenre of horror film set in isolated rural areas where outsiders encounter violent locals.
The setting typically features dense forests, dilapidated cabins, and communities cut off from modern society.
Films like *Deliverance*, *The Texas Chain Saw Massacre*, and *Wrong Turn* established the template: city people venture into unfamiliar territory and face brutality from inbred families or feral hillbillies.
The genre trades on urban fears of the rural poor.
